Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry? Here’s Why and How to Fix It
This guide covers basic maintenance checks only. Dryers involve electrical components and in gas models, gas lines. Do not open the dryer casing or attempt internal repairs yourself. If your dryer needs anything beyond a vent cleaning, contact a qualified technician. Max Appliance Repair Miami is not responsible for any damage or injury resulting from DIY repair attempts.
Your dryer used to finish a load in 45 minutes. Now it takes two full cycles to get the same clothes dry. The machine runs fine, it produces heat, but you are running it twice and your energy bill is climbing. Here is what is happening and what you can check yourself.
Why Is My Dryer Taking So Long?
Your dryer works by pushing hot air through wet clothes and exhausting that moisture-laden air outside through a vent. When airflow is restricted anywhere along that path, the dryer cannot remove moisture efficiently, and drying times double or triple.
|
01 Partially Blocked Vent The most common cause by far. A vent that is 50% blocked can double your drying time without fully stopping the dryer or triggering an obvious error. In South Florida, humidity makes lint stickier and vents clog faster. |
02 Full Lint Trap A lint trap that has not been cleared after every load reduces airflow through the drum. Over time, lint also builds up inside the trap housing beyond where the screen reaches. |
|
03 Overloaded Drum Stuffing too many clothes into a single load means hot air cannot circulate properly. Clothes on the outside dry while the pile in the middle stays damp for much longer. |
04 Clothes Coming in Too Wet If the washing machine spin cycle is not removing enough water, the dryer starts with a heavier load of moisture than it was designed for. Check that the washer is spinning at full speed. |
|
05 Worn Heating Element or Thermostat A partially failing heating element or cycling thermostat produces less heat than needed. The dryer runs but takes far longer to reach the right temperature. Requires a technician. |
06 Kinked or Too-Long Vent Hose A vent hose with sharp bends, too many turns, or excessive length significantly reduces airflow. The maximum effective length for most dryer vents is around 25 feet of straight run. |
Diagnose It Fast
| What you notice | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Takes 2+ cycles, dryer feels very hot on outside | Blocked vent — heat cannot escape |
| Takes 2+ cycles, dryer feels normal temperature outside | Weak heat output — check vent, then call technician |
| Clothes still very wet after full cycle | Overloaded drum or washer not spinning properly |
| Weak airflow at exterior vent flap | Blocked or kinked vent hose |
What You Can Safely Check
Clean the Lint Trap and Housing
Clean the Full Vent Hose
South Florida note: Standard advice says clean your dryer vent once a year. In Miami and Broward, every 6 months is the right interval. Humidity makes lint heavier and stickier, and it clogs vents faster here than in drier climates — whether you have a LG, Samsung, or Electrolux dryer.
Reduce Load Size
Try splitting your usual load in half and running two smaller loads. If each one dries in normal time, you were overloading. The dryer should never be more than three quarters full.
Check the Washer Spin Cycle
After the wash cycle ends, feel the clothes. They should feel damp but not dripping wet. If they are heavy with water, the washing machine spin speed may be too low or the machine has a drain issue. Increasing the spin speed setting on the washer is a quick test.
Vent Is Clean and It Still Takes Too Long?
At that point the issue is likely a failing heating element, a cycling thermostat that is not maintaining the right temperature, or a motor running below full speed. These all require a technician to diagnose safely. We service all major dryer brands across Miami and South Florida.
Prevention: Keep Drying Times Fast
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a dryer take to dry a normal load?
A properly functioning dryer with a clean vent should dry a standard mixed load in 35 to 50 minutes. If it consistently takes over an hour, something is restricting airflow or heat output.
My dryer takes longer in summer. Is that normal?
In South Florida, yes, somewhat. When outdoor humidity is very high, the dryer pushes moisture-laden air out against already-humid air. It is a real effect. But if summer drying times are more than 30% longer than winter, check the vent.
Is running the dryer twice bad for it?
It accelerates wear on the heating element, the drum bearing, and the motor. It also roughly doubles your energy use per load. Find and fix the cause rather than routinely running double cycles.

A slow dryer is almost always a vent problem. Clean the lint trap, clean the full vent hose, check the exterior flap, and you will most likely solve it in under 20 minutes. If you do not, a technician can find the cause quickly.
