LG Washer UE Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

A UE code on an LG washer means the machine detected an unbalanced load and stopped spinning to protect itself. In most cases it is not a fault at all. The drum could not distribute the laundry evenly, so it paused rather than damage the bearings. Redistributing the load fixes it most of the time. If UE keeps returning on every cycle, something mechanical or electronic needs attention.

What the UE code actually means

UE stands for unbalanced error. On some LG panels it displays as uE, Ub or 1E depending on the model year. The washer spins the drum slowly, senses that the weight is sitting on one side, and refills with water to try to float the load back into position. If it cannot balance after several attempts, it stops and shows the code.

That behaviour is a safety feature. A drum spinning at 1,000 rpm with the weight on one side puts enormous strain on the bearings and suspension, and that is a far more expensive repair than the one you are trying to avoid.

The six most common causes

A genuinely uneven load. One heavy item such as a bath mat, comforter or pair of jeans thrown in with light items. This is the number one cause.
Overloading or underloading. Both cause the same result. A single towel has nothing to balance against, and a packed drum cannot move at all.
The washer is not level. If the machine rocks when you push a corner, the drum cannot find its balance point. Very common on tile floors across South Florida.
Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers. These dampen drum movement. Once they weaken, the drum swings too far and trips the sensor even on a fair load.
Failed drum bearings. Usually accompanied by a loud grinding or rumbling noise during spin.
A faulty rotor position sensor or control board. Less common, but it makes the washer misread the load every time.

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order before calling anyone.

Pause the cycle, open the door, and redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum. Then restart the spin.
Wash bulky items such as comforters and bath mats on their own, or pair them with one or two similar-weight items.
Check the machine is level. Push down on each corner. If it rocks, adjust the feet until it sits solid, then tighten the lock nuts.
Make sure all four feet are in contact with the floor and that no packaging or shipping bolts remain on a recently installed machine.
Run a spin-only cycle with a few towels. If it completes without a code, the problem was the load, not the washer.

Do not attempt to replace suspension rods, bearings or the control board yourself. Those repairs require the drum to come out, and reassembly errors turn a moderate repair into a replacement.

When UE means a real fault

Call a technician if any of these apply:

UE appears on every cycle regardless of load size or type
The drum makes a grinding, rumbling or metallic noise while spinning
The drum moves excessively by hand, or you can rock it up and down
The machine walks across the floor during spin even when level
Clothes come out soaking wet because the washer never reaches full spin

Those point to suspension, bearing or sensor failure. Continuing to run the machine in that state usually turns a repairable fault into a scrapped washer.

Two local factors make UE more common here. Tile floors are standard in South Florida homes and are far less forgiving of a slightly unlevel machine than timber. And high-rise laundry closets often sit on raised platforms or pedestals that flex, which lets the washer shift out of level over time even after a correct installation.

How to load an LG washer so UE stops happening

Most repeat UE codes are a loading habit rather than a fault. LG drums balance best when the weight is spread around the drum wall rather than sitting in one clump at the bottom.

Load items one at a time rather than dropping a bundle in together. A bundle stays a bundle through the whole wash.
Mix item sizes. Two or three towels with a load of shirts balances far better than towels alone.
Never wash a single heavy item on its own. One bath mat, one hoodie or one pair of jeans is the classic UE trigger.
Fill the drum to about three quarters. Packed tight is as bad as nearly empty.
Fasten duvet covers and pillowcases. Loose covers swallow smaller items and create one heavy lump mid-cycle.

How to check the suspension yourself

You cannot repair the suspension safely, but you can tell a technician what they are walking into, which often saves time on the visit.

With the machine empty and off, open the door and push down firmly on the inside of the drum, then let go. A healthy drum sinks a little and settles almost immediately. If it bounces several times before settling, the suspension rods or shock absorbers have lost their damping. Next, take hold of the drum at the top and try to rock it front to back. A small amount of movement is normal. If it moves freely or you hear a knock as it hits the cabinet, the suspension is worn.

Finally, spin the empty drum by hand. It should turn smoothly and quietly. A grinding or gravelly sound means the bearings, and bearings are the repair where the age of the machine really matters.

How LG UE differs from other brands

Front-load and top-load LG machines handle imbalance differently. Front loaders redistribute by tumbling slowly and adding a little water, and they will usually try three or four times before giving up. LG top loaders with a direct drive motor sense imbalance through the motor itself, so they can throw UE earlier in the cycle and with less warning. On top loaders, check that the machine is level first, because they are more sensitive to an uneven floor than front loaders are.

If your model shows the code as uE with a lower-case u, that is the same condition. LG changed the display convention across model years, not the meaning.

What it costs to ignore it

A washer that keeps trying to spin an unbalanced load transfers that force into the suspension, then the bearings, then the outer tub. Suspension rods are a straightforward parts replacement. Bearings mean stripping the machine down, and on many models the bearing is pressed into the outer tub, so the repair becomes a tub replacement. That is the point where a ten-year-old machine stops being worth fixing. Acting on a repeating UE early is what keeps you in the cheap half of that range.
